The Camp Bullis Sentinel Landscape Partnership is a locally led, collaborative group focused on conserving natural resources, strengthening military readiness, and bolstering agricultural productivity around Joint Base San Antonio-Camp Bullis.
What is a Sentinel Landscape Partnership?
Sentinel landscapes are areas where conservation, working lands, and national defense priorities meet. These areas are centered around at least one strategically important military installation and include high-priority lands for the United States Dept. of Agriculture (USDA), Dept. of Defense (DOD), and Dept. of Interior (DOI). Importantly, they encompass agricultural and ranch lands that are appropriately sized to meet the ecological restoration goals specific to each landscape. These lands serve as critical buffers for military installations by maintaining land use that is compatible with their testing and training missions.
The purpose of the Camp Bullis Sentinel Landscape Partnership is to build and sustain a diverse and locally driven collaborative that effectively engages communities and volunteering landowners with technical and financial resources to conserve natural resources, bolster agricultural viability, and protect and strengthen military readiness at Joint Base San Antonio—Camp Bullis.
What is a Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP)?
A Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) is a partner-driven approach to conservation that funds solutions to natural resource challenges on working land. By leveraging collective resources and collaborating on common goals, RCPP demonstrates the power of public-private partnerships in delivering results for agriculture and conservation.
How can this project help landowners?
The Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP) offers technical and financial resources to private landowners in the designated area surrounding Camp Bullis that align with their stewardship goals and the goals critical to the mission of Joint Base San Antonio—Camp Bullis. Good land stewardship enhances water quality and quantity, mitigates floods and drought, supports agricultural productivity, and improves wildlife habitat.
NRI is the lead partner of the Camp Bullis RCPP and will be assisting interested landowners in voluntary programs that incentivize sustainable land management and agricultural practices. Funding is available for landowners to protect their property in entity-held conservation easements and/or for implementing land management practices.
